Haumoana
Hawkes Bay
Haumoana House, designed by Glamuzina Architects and located between the Tuki Tuki River and the East Coast of New Zealand in Hawke’s Bay, demonstrates the powerful interaction between architecture and landscape. In collaboration with Jensen’s Projects, Xanthe White’s landscape design integrates the home seamlessly into its surroundings, with carefully constructed terraces that create a natural flow between indoor and outdoor spaces.
The design features purposeful zoning, with areas dedicated to outdoor living. Terraced garden beds echo the geometry of the house while navigating the land’s contours to form intimate, functional spaces. Native grasses sway in the coastal winds, while textured perennials bring softness and colour.
Xanthe White’s terracing grounds the home within the landscape. Each level offers a new experience, shifting textures, changing vistas, and layered planting that responds to the site’s natural slope. Designed to evolve with the seasons, the garden grows richer over time. From the embrace of native planting around the pool to a productive vegetable garden tucked into the terraces, the landscape becomes an integral part of the home.
Built with care and intention, this landscape fosters a symbiotic relationship between architecture and nature, creating a place where the rhythms of life and the environment are deeply intertwined, and where the home feels truly rooted in its place.
